Craftsmen making hand-carved woodblocks

The first step in making Rasa & You curties and bags is to make woodcuts.

Because the woodblock is repeatedly pressed and washed, it is made of hard wood such as durable teak or rosewood.

First, you trace the design on the woodblock and sketch on the woodblock.

Craftsmen carve these exquisite motifs while beating chisels with wooden sticks. The engraved motifs can be as small as about one millimeter wide.

The blocks created to print a single motif require a main block to represent the outline of the design and a small block to fill the color in the motif.

It's a very delicate and demanding job, but many are rewarding and the craftsmen are proud of their work.
